It was one of those times that me and my friend got together and had a few bottles of beer.
As out of place as it may, my friend suddenly asked, I wonder why some people believe in God. How does their belief in a deity affect the way they live?
To which I replied, For them, Gods existence makes life easier to deal with.
He chuckled, How could that be? Gods! Theres so many of them! We have holy wars, discordance and confusion everywhere because people chose a god or two and hate the others. There will never be unity in this world as long as people believe in these gods.
He sat there for a moment and then continued, Why do most men believe in God? I think that is stupid, it is like having an imaginary friend.
I asked, Have you ever thought why men created deities?
People just can't explain their origin, or how it all began, they created deities to explain those shit. However, we now have sophisticated science to explain all that, so why still put faith in deities? What for? Morality? He replied.
That is what most people think, I answered him, but I don't think that is it, there is something in this life that is beyond our control.
Like what? He demanded.
Death. I answered, People don't really care about the past, it is a trivial matter. What people are afraid of is the unknown future, things that are about to happen from this second to the next, to minutes, hours, days, months and years to come. Life is uncertain but death is something we all cannot avoid.
Alright, so what has a deity got to do with it? He asked.
Men created God to have a purpose. I said.
A purpose? He snorted.
Exactly. Why do we live? Why do we work so hard every day? We educate ourselves, find a stable job, start a family if we feel like it, find new hobbies, meet new people and then we die. What happens then? If everything ends in death, why go through the daily suffering of tedious work, put up with insufferable people, go through schools? When were dead, we can no longer enjoy that luxurious home or drive that expensive car, why then do we work so hard to attain wealth? For others to enjoy when were gone?
And the point is? He asked while getting another bottle of beer.
The point is, since men are incapable of saving themselves from death, they created a supernatural being from the figment of their mind, a Deity who is immortal and can give them immortality. People find life meaningful since they believe that life here on earth is just preparation for the eternal one they attain after death.
What kind of an idiot who would want to live forever? He retorted, and then took a gulp of beer, I certainly dont want to. I wouldnt want to live for a thousand years! An eternity? That is bullshit man! Mortality is what makes life even more precious and beautiful since we wont be always here.
As I was saying, people are not ready to accept it, why work so hard to attain wealth and prestige only to wither and die? I asked.
But you will not be forgotten, you will still live in the minds of those who knows you and your work if ever helpful to others will not go to waste. He replied.
And when those people who knows you die too, who will remember you then? Is that what your life is worth? To become a legend, to live in human minds? You were immortalized by your work and achievements yet you wont be there to enjoy it? What good will those virtue do to you? Nothing! People, even with their little achievements and glory, just cant accept that their life will be rewarded with death, because they believe that life is worth more than that.
Well tough shit for them! Thats how life goes; its been like that and will always be.
And that is why they keep on hoping for a God and deities.
Guess that is just a fact of life, they find life easier with a God to depend on. He said and then drained his bottle.
Well, the good news is for us. I added.
There is no God or deities, we dont believe in any illusions like those poor fools. Lets drink and be merry for tomorrow we die!
Cheers to that!
